Do I really need malaria medication while touring northern Namibia?

I am planning a road trip along the C40 road up to Etosha and am debating if malaria pills are strictly necessary this time of year. My doctor advised a prophylactic, but I wanted to hear from locals if the mosquito activity has been low lately due to the dry season.
